Brakes

Looking for some guidance on my 16v restoration, anyone recommend a replacement radiator and brake set up? Completely replacing what’s there atm. Not sure if I should refurbish existing callipers or replace with alternative.

and if you want OEM or to refurbish old there a company called big red  http://www.biggred.co.uk/brake-calipers

personally im happy top fit anything that a motorfactor supplies, i prefer pairs rather than individual.. so if a caliper is seized i recommend to customer to change both.  so that actions are similar. you can adjust slightly but less time needed to fit to new/refurbished items

Just looking at the repo big bumper kit at VW heritage and wondered if any of you guys have actually had any experience with them- as my originals are pretty rough

people would tend to stay away from the repro stuff, its a bit out at times, but depends on how anal you are when looking at things.
Try matthew palmer and brendan moss for old parts, you may be lucky.  both on facebook.

My job now is to repair and paint cars, servicing, some panels are great.. some require a bit of work to look right.
At present i'm welding at T4 camper with a mix of sill panels from 3 different manufacturers...not suppliers...   one set has a great sharp swage line and the other is more rounded in profile.   when not sticking nose at them they look fine, but can easily distinguish panels. so we are considering raising the stone guard 25mm to hide the different swage the customer is fully aware of the issue, weirdly 20yr old t4 van has less replacement repro parts than a 40yr escort/golf.

They are terrible fitting to be honest, fitted a rear one on my mates car with him, the amount of fecking around needed and it still didn't fit or look right.

Alternatively he has just bought some of these from Werk34 and he said they are spot on https://www.werk34.de/en/rear-bumper-red-trim-fit-for-golf-mk2-807.191.301-fq.html so would assume the big bumpers are good also.

Regarding brake discs, from what I have been reading could someone just confirm I haven't misunderstood please- my 16v has 256mm discs currently, am I right in thinking I can put 280mm straight on with no mods?

Personally I would speak to the likes of brendon Moss at dubstock and source OEM bumpers or refurbish yours, the one set I used on my 8V GTI from bigboystoys which is now VW Heritage were not the best fitting.

As for the brakes the standard 16v brakes are good for 260 odd bhp when used with decent quality discs and pads, I used 16v brakes on my 20v turbo Mk2 and they stopped it pretty damn quick, you have to remember to the golf's are sub 1000kg in weight so big big brakes can be overkill.
