the radio support holes of you gti guys, are they all made out of metal ?

for them, the standard measures are a bit big, so i have adapted them (standard is standard in my code).

@AndyBa i got it wrong in reply 14.
i thought you have ment my screwcaps in reply 13
and you posted the link cause of the pattern
(although i was a bit puzzled
about how i was considered to extract it).

how does the part look like from the back side ?
if you have a detached one, may you post a picture ?

there are libraries out there, with which
one should be able to model the front side shape.
probably round anything or a bezier curve library.
i'm new to this, but i plan to go there anyway.

does the part only come with big bumper cars ?
we don't have those, so i do not have a specimen
and would need a pack of measurements.

regarding the structure, the part could probably be reworked after printing.

@Eddypeck you fixed your bumpers.
Have you done something about structure ? How well did it come out ?
May you maybe put a high-res-pic of the restorated part into your thread ?

another possibility would be a heightmap.
there i would need e.g. a greyscale image,
where the color intensity represents the height.

i tried to scan the screwcapfront covered in chalkwater,
but it did not fade well plus i have a scanner issue.
maybe it does not like linux anymore or the other way.

I don't know if this will get any response, as the thread hasn't had much attention for a while it seems I just wanted to ask out of interest if one of the people with a 3D printer is willing to 3D print parts for other users upon request, I would imagine a fee would be included? If this is something that someone would be willing to do, what would the rough cost be?

have you already checked the prices of 3d-printing-companies ?

in general:
mainly on Lord_Vader's thingiverse,
i found a trove of parts, which i missed before.

also there are many parts i have not much knowledge about.
the abs-sensor-hole-cap from above is a good example, here.

many people prefer more oem-looking parts from ebay.
although there are also custom parts,
one could ask if covering 3d-models is the way to go.
to me, on the other hand, 3d-printing would math early vw-philosophy
of having a car, which is easy to maintain
and on which much could be quickly and independently done by one self.

if we like do to stuff there, vetting parts could help.

as opposed to the parts-quiz, where one is supposed to know the part,
i've long considered a what is this thread, which maybe also could be used for 3d-models,
but there is also the further discussion if the part is relevant enough and stuff.
so i wouldn't be sure if there or here or what.

then there could be put effort into structuring the 3d-part-list better
like for example dividing the collection into different sections
like engine compartment, passenger cabin
and further into dashboard, ceiling or something.

without much consideration,
i would have my thoughts near a wordpress for this,
and maybe the library section.

another point is, that users from the web probably do not register
to actively ask for a model (and there are parts, mostly mine,
which are shared on that base).

some may even not peak english fluent enough to participate in this way.
many just want to quickly print something for their mk2.

course of fewer downloads, this probably wouldn't hamper
the forum-bandwidth as much as pictures.

i just wanted to express my thoughts, it doesn't have to be it or here, of course.

Wow that was a very deep and philosophical reply!

I haven't checked the price of printing companies, but I imagine unless I was getting something big or many things printed, then the cost would probably be disproportionately high relative to the item being printed. A good analogy for this is, it's like buying a £2.00 item but then having to pay an £8.00 deliver fee, where the delivery fee represents the cost one might be charged by a private company.

I'm happy to pay whatever the cost is to a private individual specifically from this forum., as I'll know it would be the raw cost and maybe with a bit extra for their time.

To be honest I just wanted to see if it was something that people with 3d printers from this forum would be happy doing, and whether they would want to charge me a cost on top of what the delivery is, and a rough guide price. I understand that maybe it would only be available in the UK which is fine for me as I'm UK based.

To be honest for small things like clips, blanking plugs such as those used for switches in the centre console, are at least to me small things so it wouldn't bother me if they're not OEM as it's only plastic. I understand maybe to others it might be a bigger deal, which is fine but to me plastic is plastic.

Yeah, I do dabble with the printing.
Was there anything in particular/any STLs you had in mind?
If it's just a case of printing an STL, it's easy, but to design something from scratch is much harder.
I'm no a designer by trade, so it takes me much longer. I recently designed a surround to allow fitment of an 02J shifter in the standard centre console and get the gearshift gaiter back down. Took me literally weeks and about 18 different variants until I was happy.

I'm currently working my way through a Fusion360 course, so far following the tutorials I've designed a few things - but that is just literally copying each step of what they are doing. I'm a fair way off creating my own designs, but that's a place I'd like to get to soon
