How it all started!’

[/img]

I’ve recently acquired this and am now going through the motions of bringing it back up to standard.

The first change is the removal of the old Dare alloys and reinstating the original bbs RA 15” alloys with much more
to follow. I’ll attempt to keep this updated as best I can with the progress!!

Right so it’s been a while since the post but the golf started to smoke on start up and dissipate after the engine warmed up so wasn’t to concerned.

However this progressed in to smoking all the time and then finally with thick black smoke spitting out of the exhaust!! which as you can imagine caused me some sleepless nights.

Not being that mechanically minded I thought the worst and assumed the engine had had it and that it was the end of the mk2 for the foreseeable future.

However after talking to and being tutored about the workings of the symptoms of the said smoke by a very knowledgeable and experienced forum member I was directed to the coolant temperature sensor as a possible cause and instructed to purchase a volt meter for future learning and direction whilst awaiting the new sensor.

As is always the way the sensor arrive with the meter still awaiting dispatched so decided to just swap the old with new and see what happened.

Those of you with more understanding of the digi 8v will have already worked out that this was in fact the cause and cured the problem straight away.

Once the volt meter arrives I’ll be measuring the resistance of the old and new to distinguish the difference and then trying all the rest of the sensors via the ecu loom (whilst under instruction) to learn how these respond to help with fault finding in the future.

It’s been a good few weeks, learning more in that time than I have in the past 20 years about the workings of the car and am looking forward to learning a lot more and a special thanks to the forum member (you know who you are).

The best bit was putting the learning into practice and the feeling of achievement afterwards. Coupled with the fact that the golf lives to fight another day!!

I think the blue sensors go faulty after a while. That was causing fueling issues on mine a while ago. I think I've probably had about 3 in 24 years ownership. I was recommended to buy a genuine VW one.

Hi ken & Andy,
Yep the rubbing was down to the rear alloy being 9” wide with quite a low ET so stuck out to far. A bit of a shame as in all honesty I quite liked the look of them, but the bbs ra’s are not to be sniffed at. Thanks for asking.

Andy your right I’ve been told the same thing, and had I not been to impatient to find out if it could fix it I would have definitely got a genuine VW one. But I’m sure I’ll be changing it again at some point so will take the learning from this time round and improve upon it next time I’m thinking.

Might be an idea to buy a genuine one now, while you can still get them and have it in stock ready.
