Members' Cars / Re: 1989 LHD Special GTI 8v
Not quite finished fitting it yet - need to pull it out again to fit the pre-out cable which arrived. I like it a lot better than the Pioneer that I had - it was just too bright and looked too modern. This I appreciate isn't period or strictly VW either - but it's closer than my Pioneer was and if I can add the subtle Bluetooth stream...it'll be better than what I had! Apologies for the photo quality but you get the idea...

Have added a different head unit this week - I've gone for a Skoda Symphony CD/MP3 headunit. It blends in well with the dash (same green illumination) and looks quite standard. Nice simple layout and buttons and no flashy features. Does have a very subtle red security LED which is a nice touch.

I've added the pre-out lead to give me the possibility of adding an amp. I've also added a DIN aerial adapter too so I can reuse my existing aerial connection.

I'm intending too to add a Bluetooth streaming option. I'll need one that emulates a CD changer so the cheap mini-din don't do this (I've tried!) so that'll be next on the list. Then I should have a modern but not flashy standard looking headunit that I can stream to with all the cabling hidden under the unit..... That's the plan anyway!

New Members Say Hi! / Re: Old member re-registered!
Hello both - good to know there's local members! I did pop to a couple of meetings at Bradley Stoke but sadly wasn't in my Golf at that point and did meet a few faces. Spoke to Michelle and her husband I think who'd just purchased a white late 8v. Mine is STILL not on the road years later, but I'm hopeful for this year....famous last words....

Love Thornbury - we go often when we can but haven't seen any mk2 in the area yet, I'll keep an eye out!

General Chat / Re: Garage concrete - pvc tiles/epoxy?
I'd go for an epoxy DPM instead - Then lay something over the top of that. You need to stop the damp rising through the slab. Put something straight on top of the already damp surface and you'll get all sorts of issues.

Most epoxy DPM can go over slightly damp surfaces too, I've no brand to recommend but a good write up and idea of pricing here...

General Chat / Re: Solar panel chargers
I have one in my Volvo and one in my wife's Volvo too. Bought them on Amazon about a year ago when we suddenly started to use our cars less. Not sure if the cigarette socket is perm live, but I have our Volvo ones connected on the side rear window (it comes with suckers) and connected to the boot 12v socket (as that's perm live).

It's not going to ever charge a flat battery but it's now connected all the year round and just helps to trickle topup the battery. Neither cars have had an issue starting since - even if left unused for weeks.

I bought this one and it was about £17 at the time - now about £20.

Mk2 Golf/Jetta Sales / Re: Wanted - a Jetta
Great project Matt! It's a shame they got a bad rep, but I think they'll have their day! I still like the cabrio mk3 too and they're DIRT cheap. There's something for me about the MK3 that really appeals - still a classic but has all the mod-cons you need. Far too many got boy-raced up but I think they've all moved onto the MK4 and 5 now. I'd love a nice dragon green 16v in standard guise - possibly just lowered a little. Perfect!

Mk2 Golf/Jetta Sales / Re: Wanted - a Jetta
Oh lovely - I've a real soft spot for the MK3. Never owned a MK3 GTI, but a Driver and really loved that car - especially the seats.

With ABF getting "R-A-R-E"  actually these days- where did you source this? Won't become a parts bin will it?!

Edit - Happy now forum software - I've put it in quotes!!

Nope.....

I.C.E & Electrical / Re: Bluetooth and original "Gamma" style radios?
This is nearly there - but still requires an AUX socket on the headunit. I like the neat idea behind this too - ISO power so nice and discreet behind unit. This would be perfect for a headunit that had  a rear mounted AUX socket. I have an older Pioneer in mine - looks quite standard and a good matching green but I yearn for a VW unit with AUX like yourself really?

Ignition on yes I believe it will. Ignition and engine off I don’t think it does, it’ll just display the time.
