Brilliant replies - I hadn't expected the bottletops to open up all this info - thanks for posting the brochures, love that sort of stuff (don't suppose you have a 95 Corrado one you can PM me the pictures of?)

And the model year changes are great to read. Mine's an 88 F plate so i think a Digifant but hadn't realised it might be a type 19, however that said the two white cars above look the same to me!

The designation debate can be quite divisive!!!!   :))  :))

Check your VIN number. If it starts WVWZZZ19 then you could claim it as a an early designation model with the number 19 (otherwise known as Type-19) and if it starts WVWZZZ1G then you can't.............................

My Golf was built in June 1988 and has the 19 VIN rather than the 1G VIN but it's a Mk2 Golf at the end of the day and that is all that matters  8)

What's really important is that 8v, 3 door, small bumper cars are better than all the rest :D


1988 8v GTI, 3 door in black.  It's a bit like me, doesn't look too bad from a distance but up close.......:D

Let's not get into this, clearly neither are type19, as they both have the mirrors in the wrong place and the wipers go the wrong way, ;-)

The one on the right is a genuine type nineteen, different handbrake and 19 chassis number , the other is a 1G .. admittedly neither have the mk1 side decals , spookily the 19 doesn’t have tinted windows

Has the one on the right been clocked?

T y p e - 1 9 is an unofficial term some people use to describe the pre-87 cars with the small front quarter light windows, among other things.

The problem is the reference is made because of the 19 chassis designation. Yet the chassis designation continued to be used on the later spec ‘facelift’ cars.

So, I think we’re all in agreement that the type19 ‘nickname’ is technically flawed, but looks like it’s here to stay.

Of the two white cars above, yes one has a 19 chassis but neither are, by definition a ‘type19’.

We could just call them pre-facelift, early or whatever.

Let it go.... lol

Just checked mine - it's a 1G registered 23/8/88

Sorting out stuff and re-found this - It's an internal 'VAG Customer Services' bulletin dated February 1985 - for the German speaking market so can't say if the information also applied elsewhere.

Seems to show that Bottletops were approved, and presumably therefore could be ordered / fitted to amongst others the 19E 82Kw Golf (our MK2 8v GTI).
