Oh Yeah, I can see what you mean now!

Ordered a Bosch Angle Grinder, wire brush attachment, some rust reformer and satin black paint. I know some tinwork in they bay needs doing however still debating on the OG bumper irons.

Please tell me you have ordered PPE too!
Go with a full face mask if you can, when new those wire brushes throw the bristles out all over the place until they bed in.
They always get stuck in my clothes etc. Trust me, you don't want that getting fired at your face, I've literally had to pull one out of my cheek before!

BTW, love the cat!

Thanks mate- I didn’t even think about this beyond goggles being honest! I’ll get some on order.

I think this picture should explain better - although in the last pictures, check where the bottom chrome trim matches to registration letters:

Well I never! thanks for sharing that makes a lot more sense now.

Weird that none of us never knew this either!

Another little update:

Recieved some little bits in the post ready to start doing the tinwork on the Mk2

Had some spare time so gave the back end of the car a little tidy up:

Much better...

Mid clean on the floor:

That'll do for now:

Had another day to play with the MK2, so this time - I thought I'd try the front end instead.

New clip on that John Sigsworth gave me for free with the Grill. (Thanks!)

Gril off:

Bumper off:

Cleaned up all behind the slam panel and where the bumper sits whilst I have the access:

Inside of the legs looking good with waxoyl:

Thankfully the grill and Jetta bumper that were removed were genuine items!

Golf bumper on:

Grill on:

That's all for today!

Crazy isn't it!

Little update:

I did some poking around that rust hole, ended up like this. Therefore, I'm going to start gathering bits for the welding and get that sorted this week/weekend.

Unexpectedly, I picked this up last night:

So, I really need to decide what to do with the little CL. My main plan now which I think is most likely to be carried out is repair it as initially planned and get everything up to my standards and then look to put it up for sale. The main reasong being I've always really wanted a 3 door GTI small bumper as you all know and being an 84 just makes it that extra bit special. It was a hard choice to consider letting my little CL go because of the history and mileage and really had grown acustom to it but I can only have one unfortunately.

More updates to come in the next few weeks - hopefully big ones.

Little supplies pickup today:

This will have to wait until after my operation most likely, so probably going to be lacking on updates for a few months.

Little update:

Father in law has been doing the welding on the rear valance, therefore the pictures are a little sparse!

Outer and inner was cut out and fabricated from scratch. Thought we could stop at exhaust seam but had to cut and continue past the line:

Didn't manage to get a picture after that.

Skim of filler - awaiting sand down

Sanded and primer on:

Also, got some bits in the post today.

OEM Engine mounts and gear linkage rebuild kit

Will keep updating as I can!

Again, sorry for the lack of pictures but:

We're in colour! The line of the stonechip has now been blended with the scuff mark gone.

Additionally, ground back the black waxoyl patch - found it to be metal and then got it filled.

Primed and painted:

Very happy with the colour match and finish!

Now to waxoyl the inner of the valance, arch and along the sill.

Our broadband is 2.0 Mbps (often less) so I never get a chance to see all your piccies Sam... usually freezes out part way through they're so large!

Stuck with it last night and finally got to see a few - what product did you use for the textured stone chip / underseal on the lower section repair, looks very factory?

That’s terrible! Do you live out in the country?

The product is as above - Gerko Anti Gravel Black - really happy with the finish! It’s probably not exactly the same but very close!

Missed this… that is a special car… tons of GTis out there in super condition, not so many lesser model without coilovers ,  beer kegs and kids trikes on roof racks ….wouldn’t want to part with that .

For sure, it’s really nice to be honest. We will see what happens as nothing is set in stone!
