Engine & Gearbox / Re: Cutting out after a couple of minutes
I don’t know much about carb’ed cars. I’ve only ever had GTIs.

But based on previous posts I’ve seen from others it could be something to do with the wax stat.

The wax stat is a little device that changes the fueling once warm. Wax melts within the device and allows something to move and therefore make the adjustment.

I think this is only an issue on the original Peiburg carb, and not an aftermarket Webber. But if you have the original then this maybe something to look into further.

Engine & Gearbox / Re: Miltek Exhaust -How loud?
I have a Miltek on mine, 1991 stock 8v GTI.

It was fitted by a previous owner, so don't know much about it, but it's the full kit from the downpipe back. Twin tailpipe but they're fatter than standard with a rolled finish so not an OE look, but good enough for me and fits the mildly modified look I'm happy with.

With a later-spec car the carpets are cheap and crappy compared to early cars so I don't know how much that affects things. I have standard original and quite tired underlay.

Whilst is sounds great with your foot down when you're in that kind of mood. I have to be honest, for the everyday motorway commute, even at cruising speed, when I first got the car I thought it was pretty unbearable.

I've got used to it now, and mostly ignore it. But it still gets to me sometimes.

I have wondered how much better it would be with Dynomat and/or a decent carpets and underlay kit from Newton. But that's probably more money than I'd be willing to spend... especially while it still leaks in heavy rain :(

Looking back at 2023, and I know it's not over yet, but what a year for me.
I think this has been my most active in shows and meets ever and it's been great.

The monthly Bristol meets kicked off in February and run every month (except January).
In May I went to my first Queen Square Bristol Meet at Eastwood Park.
June was a cracking Bristol Volksfest and Caffeine and Machine.
July started with a car show at the local carnival,
and obviously the OC National Meet at the end of July.
August was a really good turn out for the Bristol meet.
German Car Festival in September was possibly my furthest outing and certainly my earliest start.
And I've just been to Retro-Sect in November.
There will be one more Bristol meet, Friday 1st December and I think that should be me done.

Unlike many, I won't be putting the car away for winter. It's still my transport and in December I start a new job where I'll be going into the office more regularly so daily duties will actually be daily and not just every now and then.

How's your year been?

Regional Meets / Retro-Sect meet Tewksbury
Hey gang,

I thought I'd share this with you as there will be more of these meets next year.

Ben (bunjiweb) is a former MK2 Owner and used to be on this forum back on the previous version, anyway a few months back he opened a Retro shop in Tewksbury. With a small retro car showroom and a shop full of 80's and 90's gadgets and gizmos. From Boomboxes, games consoles, RC cars.... pretty much everything from our childhood.

I heard it described as an Antique shop for our generation, which I think summed it up great.

Anyway, on Sunday he held his first coffee and cars meet at the showroom. For more info check this out retro-sect, it's defo worth popping over if you're in the area.

I'll post up details of future dates when I find them. And here's a selection of my pics, sorry I don't put the effort into photography and editing that others do. But there's plenty more on Instagram @retro.sect.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Sun visor retrim
I need to get a replacement headliner but I like the original design so it means buying the fabric from Heritage andgetting it stuck on a glassfibre shell. It won't be cheap, hence it's on the back-burner !

It's worth noting the fabric from Heritage, whilst a good pattern match (they sent me a sample when it was in production and I helped sign off on it), is not foam-backed like the original.

If applied directly to the headliner it will show every bump and lump and will need to be 100% perfect to look halfway decent.

To be factory restored, you would need the backboard lined with a skrim foam first.

On a positive, if you do go ahead with the Heritage pattern you won't need to retrim the sunroof panel, visors or courtesy light surround.

Other Problems / Re: Unlucky for some 13 potential water leak areas.
See above. I can only assume it's coming in from the bottom of the A-pillar. I'm reluctant to take my wings off to check, but that might be the only way I'm going to find out. I already took my windscreen out already and can confirm the scuttle is all good.

That's neat. I wondered how trimmers did it. I was assuming they 'welded it like the originals.

Based on what I can see I suspect it'll be 2 halves cut (oversized) around the visor and stitched inside-out, 3/4 of the way around like a bag. It looks then like there's a long running stitch on the open edge. The 'bag' will then be turned the right way round and the Sunvisor slotted into it. The final stage would be sealing the open end with an external hand-stitch matching how a leather steering wheel cover is closed. I can't remember the name of that kind of stitch.

I wonder if they used any adhesive? @Will does the material feel loose over the visor inside or do you think it's been stuck?

I'm only a novice/amateur but I do have a sewing machine, so now I've seen this I might be willing to give it a go. I'm not bothered about the vanity mirror so I'd be happy to cover it up too.

Other Problems / Re: Unlucky for some 13 potential water leak areas.
@Eddypeck - I could imagine we are sharing the same issue. I am tempted to pump a small amount of silicone up into the gap to see if that fully solves the leak, and then at least I know where it is coming from. I feel like I have the exact same issue on the passenger side.

I've actually just done a test, I emptied a couple of litres of water into the scuttle and nothing came through. So I think the issue must be further up. Since I've had the screen out and know the top of the scuttle is OK I fear it could be the bottom of the A pillar. I know they can rust there.

I've found a pic that shows the area:

I hope it's not the case but I fear it's the only thing left to check, and the only logical answer.

The pic came form here, and there's some other pics and more info about this area.

Some of you may have seen this shared on Facebook, but a few weeks back I finally got around to fitting the RightClick remote locking kit my son got me for Christmas.

https://youtube.com/shorts/sIPkJASWyF4?feature=share

As I already had factory Central Locking I just piggy-backed the master actuator onto the existing driver door lock and let this trigger the rest of the locks using the existing air-fed system.

I then took the key blank supplied to the local independent key guy who was happy to cut this for £6. I've heard a lot of places refuse to cut blanks they don't supply.

Sorry, no other pics, It started to rain while fitting and I just wanted to get the door membrane back on and get it all back together.

More up-to-date, I got a mate at work to do a 3D print of a design I made,

It needs a bit of fettling, but it's a step in the right direction and will angle the gauges up. Currently, they're in a flat panel and it's difficult to see looking down on them from the driving position.

The final update for now, a little job completed this lunchtime....

I've replaced the old and failing, original pink-flecked expansion bottle return hose. And rather than have it trailing across the bay as is normal I thought I'd try and run it around the outside of the bay.

I don't know why more people don't do this? Hopefully, I won't find the answer to that by some kind of failure. But I ran the engine up to temp till the thermostat opened, the coolant flowed and the fan cut in. Everything seemed to be fine.

I don't usually show pics of my engine bay as it's not particularly pretty.

@Eddypeck - did sealing up the ECU cover 100% solve your leak? I seem to have a leak from the area circled in yellow, but can't see how water is getting in from that location? is that even possible? I ask because my ECU appears to be pretty dry aside from some condensation...

Unfortunately not.
I had the windscreen replaced and after that it seemed to stop, else I didn't notice it for a while.
But the leak is back so I don't know if it's the windscreen seal or if that's a red herring.
I can't work out where it's coming from a have resigned to the fact I now need to keep the car under a cover.
