Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Front Sub-Frame
No personal experience, but I imagine they would be ok. I'm fairly sure someone will be along soon.

New Members Say Hi! / Re: MK2 From northern Canada
Hi and welcome along.

What are the general conditions of the cars in your area? I kind of imagine Canada has a similar climate to UK, are the cars as rusty as ours?

Engine & Gearbox / Re: Heavy clutch
No too bad, you need to sacrifice the green end cap (and sometimes some gearbox oil) to get at it, so get a new one before you start.
But I've done it off a jack and popping a wheel off, maybe an hour max.

Our good friends at B and B do a kit, which includes the green end. Although it's not VW stamped, but I can live with that I suppose  :o .

New Members Say Hi! / Re: New member chasing my mk2 dream
Hi and welcome,

Would love to see some pics. Better still maybe we'll get to see it in person someday at one of the events the club attends or the National meet. What are do you live in?

I.C.E & Electrical / Re: Electrical issue
That's an odd one and hard to diagnose without following the wires. I'd say either a short/broken wire along the way or a previous owner bodge to bypass something.

As it's the horn, do you have the standard or aftermarket steering wheel?
Does (or has the car had) an alarm fitted in the past? potentially one that uses the cars own horn as the siren.

I.C.E & Electrical / Re: instrument cluster
The main thing with instrument clusters is the year.

There are two electrical systems in a mk2 golf. Central Electrics 1 and 2 (ce1 & ce2)

Being an E reg yours will be CE1, they changed later 1989 I belive. The easy way to tell is the position of the harazrd warning switch. On ce1 it's a rocker switch on the dash panel (like yours). Later cars with ce2 have a push button on top of the steering coloum.

The instrument clusters for CE1 have 2 large sockets, CE2 only has a single socket on the right hand side.

So if what you're looking at has 2 sockets then it's all good. The shape of the vac input varies. On early cars if was metal, later cost-saving plastic (which can result in the nipple snapping off).

As long as you get a CE1 cluster it'll be fine. VDO and Motometer makes no difference. And sometimes you see a mixture within a cluster. This would never have happened from factory, but the parts are interchangeable so someone might have replaced a faulty dial. rather than swap out the whole cluster.

There are a few other differences to consider:

Very early (1984/5) cars have an economy gauge instead of MFA. These are r.a.r.e and expensive so it's unlikely you'll find one but if you do avoid.

Diesel cars have extra light for glow plugs, you obviously don't need this.

Low spec models have a clock instead of the Rev counter, mid-spec cars have a rev counter and digital clock, but no MFA.
All parts are interchangeable and the blue PCB is the same for all so all the plugs and connections you need should be available from any cluster.

16v GTIs have a 160mph speedos and different red line on the rev counter
8v GTIs have a mixture of 120 or 140mph speedos, there's no known reason for this, it spans all years, it's the luck of the draw. But I've seen 140 more common in earlier cars.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Sun visor retrim
I got headlining from the same place, with the spare material.

I haven’t yet bothered with the sunroof panel or sun visors. It doesn’t bother me. Maybe one day I will.

Keep us posted if you find somewhere. Out of interest where are you?

General Chat / Re: DVLA start showing lost vehicles
Bit more info.

Some vehicles are still not found. So assume this update of aged information is ongoing. I guess it'll take a while.

There's also a reg I know for certain, where the car has been exported to Australia.
This just gives a last v5 date, expired MOT and SORN notice but no indication that the vehicle has left the country. So for anyone looking for an old car, don't forget this is always a possibility.

General Chat / DVLA start showing lost vehicles
Something odd has just happened.

Previously when entering an old reg on DVLA vehicle check, it would of shown no results. It just would not recognise the reg at all and wouldn't find anything about the vehicle.

I was going with the theory that this would usually indicate the vehicle has been scrapped, and most likely this was done before DVLA went digital which was early 2000s.

In my history, there are a number of vehicles that I'm fairly certain were scrapped, and most likely before 2000. In which case I think it was fair to assume, that DVLA believed there was no point in them entering the paper details onto the computer system - makes sense right?

Well, randomly, off the back of looking for another vehicle, I tried some of these old registrations and the details are now shown.

It can now find the details; make, model, colour etc.

Of the 3 vehicles I tested:
2 showed Untaxed: Tax due. dates were 1 June 2000 and 1 December 1992
1 showed SORN, sorn gives no date.

SORN was introduced in 1998

All 3 showed MOT: no results returned

MOT went digital in 2005, This makes sense there are no details as they were all off the road before this happened.

Another update to the DVLA details is that it now shows the date of last v5 issue.

For my 3 vehicles, I've got 22 May 1990, 8 September 1998, 22 December 1999.

Now looking at the May 1990 one and checking the dates, this was my purchase of the car. I used it for a couple of years hence the last tax date of December 1992. I sold it on, and back then I think it was the new buyer who sent off the v5 so it looks like that never happened. So I guess it's likely it ended up as a parts car.

I can't be sure of the other dates, but they appear to be not long after I would have let the vehicles go.

I just thought this was all very interesting and can help give a picture of a car long gone, whereas before there was just no data.

RE: G104UYO

When DVLA shows no results it usually means the vehicle was scrapped, and potentially this was done before the system was computerised (early 2000s). How long ago was it you saw it in Winchester?
