Not seen this before, not sure how I missed it but just catching up.

100% there should NOT be a centre badge on a D reg car. E reg was the change over. In theory you should not have a centre badge on a car with quarter-light front windows (hate to use the type 19) although I have seen a couple of E reg that seem to be cross over cars with a weird mix of early windows, RHD wipers, PB engines and one had a late spec rear panel - although I'm still not convinced that was form factory and suspect a later repair.

The early style rear panel as a repair panel went out of stock quite early on as far as I know*, so a rear end shunt while the car was still fairly new (2 or 3 years maybe) could have seen a replacement with a genuine VW later spec panel. Knowing VW they kept the same part number so if you called up and asked for a panel you just got what was available.


* or repair shops were too lazy to order the right parts, I had a 4 year old Mk5 escort that had a front end smash (non-ABS and someone pulled up a bit sharp in front of me, anyway... ). It went into a large main Ford dealer and they put the wrong grill on it and used the wrong shade of grey paint on the stone guard areas.

Eddypeck, we have ordered a replacement repair panel (pictured)



But we'll probably cut it up and fit the correct badges so we can have the rear end period correct. We didn't think it was right the way it is!

Thats's excellent and definitely the right thing to do.

It might be controversial but personally, rather than drill the lug holes for the age appropriate badges I would weld up the 3 holes on the right and when you get the right badges I'd cut off the lugs and just stick them on flush rather drill holes.

Some more excessive and probably unnecessary cleaning went on.

Heater matrix out, ready for mk3 replacement unit and flaps to be reconditioned.


So whilst removing the heater matrix, why just stop there?  ;)


And... Lets clean it up and get 35 years of grot off it!

You might want to check the panel against the original very closely.
I bought a KLOKKERHOLM pattern rear panel since the "chassis end" bulges showed surface rust bubbles which turned into rotten holes. The panel moulding looked fine but when the welder cut the required patches out the contours didn't match very well...disappointing.

Time to work on the doors.
A lot of gunk (not the good stuff) was sat in the doors after the membranes had perished in all but one of them.




A load of degreaser poured in and scrubbed


Clean


Now to repair the door membranes.

Sticky Stuff Remover applied


Bottom half


Top half and one door done


It was a clear evening, so a pic was required.

You might want to check the panel against the original very closely.

Good to know. Fortunately we have a mate who's a dab hand at welding who owes us a favour, so my just leave him to it and let him suffer the pain whilst we plead ignorance. :D

The T piece between the front and rear doors was just sat on its own with the vacuum pipes not connected. A bit of wiggling and in they popped and away we go!

Hehe. I was just tracking back thro your post and you indicate the you might replace the whole panel. If that's the case the difference maybe "lost".
Hopefully all will turn out fine.

Yep, I think we'll just do the whole panel as the boot floor to rear panel has rusted along the seam, you can actually see daylight on the offside corner  :o  so makes sense to cut it all out and start again.

Meanwhile...

The most exciting update yet:

The little GL genuinely surprised us with it's peppy performance, especially the pickup from low revs. It actually made us laugh on the test drive, despite the two of us having owned 200bhp+ Mk2s in the past. However, the little low mileage 1.8 carb lump had more to give.

Time for a wide band kit!

This will allow precise measurements of fuel air mixture levels allowing us to squeeze every one of the 90bhp from the mighty 1.8 carb. This will transform the driveability of this car, increasing performance and economy.

Don't forget to give the dash a good shake whilst its out to get rid of the remnants of heater flap foam.
I also reinforced the dash heater opening which fits over the heater box with modelling plastic sheet stuck with areldite and used diluted PVA to make the 'cardboard' more rigid.
