Pierburg Carburettor replacement / refurb

Hello,

I have a VW Golf mk2 1.6 driver 1991. It has been standing on my drive way for a few yrs and looking to get it going. My mechaninc tried to get it going but said the engine cut out because of the carb flooding. He tried to refurb the carb using a rebuild kit but said it carb parts were ? siezed/sticking. He is an experienced  good mechanic although not a VW specialist. Carb has an auto choke. Car has manual gear box.
Options are
1) buy a new pierburg - approx £400
2) buy new of one of  e bay - hing Kong ones about £100
3) second hand from a breakers - found one for about £75
4) Are pierburg bad carbs. - are there better webber carbs

Sorry if I am a bit think but just starting. Help and comments will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hiya
Idk how much rebuilding your mechanic did, just in case you wanted to try again I rebuilt the Pierberg 2e3 using this kit, which resolved some idle issues I was having on my 1.3

I'm not sure your carb will be exactly the same on a 1.6 but there are other kits and for about £30 it might be worth a try, although I think most people prefer to swap them for a Weber...!
Good luck :)

Edit - I took a stupid amount of photos during stripping it down so I didn't screw up putting it back together, happy to upload them somewhere if it's the same carb and that would help at all.

If you are willing to do that, it would be a fantastic source of info for others with this carb.  Just start a new thread in this section (Technical -> Engine & Gearbox) as it is the best place for it.
1988 8v GTI, 3 door in black.  It's a bit like me, doesn't look too bad from a distance but up close.......:D

Thank you guys.
Is the webber a better carb than a pierburg?
To change over do you have to do anything extra?
If you can up load the pictures it would be interesting to see how its done.  :)

Yeah I'll have to sort out the photos a bit but will try to get them uploaded asap, not sure how much sense they will actually make!
